Ask Our Engineers – Common Questions We Hear at Brandstrom Instruments

Aug 20, 2025

As summer winds down and a new academic and engineering season begins, we often see an increase in inquiries here at Brandstrom Instruments. Whether it’s students returning to campus or engineers getting back to project planning, questions about our solenoids and shutters start rolling in.

To help streamline your search, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive around this time of year.

What’s the Difference Between Bi-Stable and Self-Restoring Solenoids?

This is one of the most common technical questions we hear.

Bi-Stable Solenoids:

When energized with a brief pulse, a bi-stable solenoid rotates the shutter from its home position to a secondary position. It then remains magnetically latched in that secondary position without requiring ongoing power. An opposite polarity pulse returns the shutter to its original position, with no continuous power needed.

Self-Restoring (Momentary) Solenoids:

These are also magnetically latched in the home position, but when energized, the shutter rotates to the secondary position and stays there only while power is applied. Once the power is removed, it automatically returns to the home position. This makes self-restoring solenoids ideal for applications where a shutter should only remain open during an active signal, such as in optical or laser systems requiring precise timing.

Do You Support Space Applications?

Absolutely. We offer a series of low-outgas solenoids specifically designed for outer space environments, making them ideal for aerospace and space-bound projects. These specialized units contain no silicones or lubricants, and we even go the extra mile by using aqueous coolants, not oil-based, during the machining process.

Where Are Your Products Manufactured?

Every solenoid and shutter we sell is designed, machined, assembled, and quality tested at our facility in Ridgefield, Connecticut, just 50 miles north of New York City. We take pride in our Made in the USA production and tight quality control processes.

Can You Provide Custom Solenoid or Shutter Designs?

Yes, we can. In addition to our line of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, we frequently design and manufacture custom solenoids and shutter assemblies to meet specific engineering requirements.

How Can I Share My Design With You?

It’s simple. Reach out through our Contact an Engineer page, email us at sales@brandstrominstruments.com, or give us a call.

We’re happy to work with STEP files, PDFs, or even hand-drawn sketches, whatever gets your idea across.
