Our Products

From raw bar stock to final inspection, our solenoid-actuated shutters and filters are manufactured entirely in our Ridgefield, CT facilities. Using the most advanced multi-axis Swiss-type CNC equipment, we produce ultra-precise parts with remarkably consistent tolerances. Our customers receive a complete solenoid-shutter assembly with the mounting and motor housing machined from a single piece of metal.

A1024 Thermal Imaging Shutter from Brandstrom Instruments Our A1024 thermal imaging shutter. The two position bistable solenoid drives the nonuniformity correction flag in handheld firefighting cameras.

Our optical shutters are actuated by a spring-free electromechanical rotary solenoid. When power is applied to the motor through a continuous current or a pulse, the shutter blade will move to the 'on' position. Our self-restoring devices are fail safe, returning to the off position when power is interrupted. Bi-stable or latching shutters will return to the off position when subjected to a pulse of reverse current.

Our low voltage motors are not subject to overheating or coil burn-out. And whereas traditional iris shutters have multiple leaves that rub against each other, our products have a single moving part to eliminate the risk of failure from friction or failure in extreme temperature conditions.

Whether you need an aerospace shutter, thermal imaging shutter, laser shutter or scientific shutter, use of our products in a mission-critical application results in overall reduced operational and logistical support costs and increased overall system reliability.

Our electro-optical shutters are built with Class H materials and comply with strict aircraft specifications. Our products are designed to meet and exceed MIL STD 810 G for gunfire vibration.

AO249 Warning Indicator from Brandstrom Instruments Our AO249 Warning Indicator. The two position self-restoring solenoid drives an indicator in the analog cockpit panel instrumetation of the Black Hawk helicopter.

We offer the following miniature rotary solenoid motors for optical shutter assemblies:

  • Latching 2-position solenoids
  • Self-restoring 2-position solenoids
  • Self-restoring 3- position solenoids

Parameters such as angular travel, direction, voltage and power requirements are all optimized to individual requirements through our concurrent engineering process.
